Degeneration of the eye, usually affecting the posterior fundus (the back wall of the eye), which can result in blindness. Macular degeneration is often age-related, proving a significant problem in the elderly population. Initial symptoms may be distortion of central vision (e.g., straight lines appearing crooked).
